Not So Boring But Still Busy
I'm sure this is becoming a little boring at this point. We DID buy the camp so we could just get away! And we do!! Lots of updating, landscaping, eating out : )
Anyway we are keeping very busy this summer.====================== I am working very hard at disAbility Solutions the non-profit I co-founded 6 years ago and the board I sit on. I am so angry!!! We had to let an employee with a disability go because they cut our budget!
That's what we're here for!!!!! Our 4 core services are Peer support, skills training, advocacy and information and referral. In addition to that we run a Cookables program to teach how to shop, cook, nutritian etc. Even if the only appliance that individual owns is a toaster oven! We help with housing, transportation, health, computer skills and the internet. We present workshops throughout the state on Emergancy Preparedness. Recently we had to give up a service that allowed us to give phones to the hard of hearing in our community. We gave away about 500 a year to the elderly mostly. But because of these same budget cuts we had to discontinue the program.
So I've been working to raise funds, set up events, etc. Luckily we got an anonymous donation from a company in New York for $10,000 with $5000 of that earmarked to keep our service animal training classes going. It costs us $12,000 a year to run that program free of charge for our consumers. Check out the FaceBook page or DSIL.org. We are changing lives down here!!!
Arn't YOU lucky you don't have any of these challenges??? Arn't you lucky you can buy a house or drive a car? That your parents don't have to wonder if you will be all right when they are gone?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

DSIL's mission is to assist and educate those persons with disabilities to be independent and we've had plenty getting jobs and higher education and life. The American dream. We've snatched adults with disabilities away from their "overprotective" parents and steered them to independence. Hard to believe that some parents like to think that their children will always stay at home and they are not shy about beating their kid down to think they can never amount to anything and they need to be dependent on them forever.
